FRANCISCAN FRIARS LEAVE SERVICE
AT ARCHBISHOP RYAN HIGH SCHOOL

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia has received notice from the Franciscan Friars of the Assumption Province, who have helped to staff Archbishop Ryan High School since its founding, of the conclusion of the Franciscans' commitment to the school. After forty-one years of service by the Franciscans at Ryan, Provincial Minister, Reverend Leslie Hoppe, O.F.M. said the diminishing number of priests and brothers in their congregation no longer permits them to serve at the school in Northeast Philadelphia. (One priest, Father Rene Barzczk, O.F.M., will remain at the school as Development Director.)

In this past school year, seven friars served at Ryan. Earlier this school year, the Franciscans informed the school of their intent to conclude their service. Faculty and staff members were notified in December of the change and a letter to alumni from Father Hoppe was included in a recent alumni newsletter.
