Parade of High School Marching Bands

starting from Hallahan High School, 311 North 19th Street

Honor guards from 23 Archdiocesan high schools, All-Catholic Chorus members and marching bands from four high schools (total of 361 students)will represent young people of the Archdiocese in paying tribute to Cardinal Bevilacqua. Bands are from Archbishop Wood, Cardinal O'Hara, Archbishop Carroll and Archbishop Ryan High Schools. The parade of students will travel Wood Street (near Hallahan) to 17th Street. South on 17th Street to Race Street. West on Race Street to 18th Street. North on 18th Street to the Cathedral.

Procession moves from the front of the Archdiocesan Office Center at 222 N. 17th Street, south on 17th to Race Street. West on Race Street to 18th Street. North on 18th Street to the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, 18th Street and Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

1400 invited guests will attend Mass at the Cathedral. They include five other United States Cardinals: His Eminence Francis Cardinal George, Archbishop of Chicago; His Eminence James Cardinal Hickey, Archbishop of Washington, D.C.; His Eminence William Cardinal Keeler, Archbishop of Baltimore; His Eminence Bernard Cardinal Law, Archbishop of Boston; His Eminence Roger Cardinal Mahony, Archbishop of Los Angeles. Bishop Gabriel Montalvo, the Apostolic Nuncio, will be one of 75 Archbishops and Bishops in attendance. More than 400 priests will attend. Some of the 825 guests include major religious superiors, Archdiocesan Directors, College Presidents, Papal Honorees, Secondary Principals, Board Members, and civic officials. Among the officials are Lieutenant Governor, Mark Schweiker, Philadelphia Police Commissioner John Timoney and former Ambassador to the Vatican, Thomas Melady.

Close to 60 members of Cardinal Bevilacqua's family will be in attendance, as will several eighth grade classmates. Cardinal Bevilacqua's nephew, Rev. Msgr. John Alesandro, Vicar for Administration for the Diocese of Rockville Centre, New York will also be among the guests. Cardinal Bevilacqua's brother, Dr. Michael Bevilacqua, will be one of the lectors for the Mass.

Parishioners from throughout the Archdiocese will comprise the choir. Other parishioners will carry banners representing the six Vicariates of the Archdiocese (Philadelphia-North, Philadelphia-South, Bucks County, Chester County, Delaware County, Montgomery County). Still others will serve as official greeters and cantors and members of the offertory procession.

50 children from parishes of the Archdiocese will make a special presentation of roses to His Eminence. Their significance to the Cardinal will be explained during the liturgy.

Cardinal Bevilacqua will give the homily. Text will be provided Sunday.

Cardinal Bevilacqua was ordained to the priesthood June 11, 1949 in the Diocese of Brooklyn. His Eminence was installed as Archbishop of Philadelphia February 11, 1988, and elevated to the College of Cardinals June 28, 1991.

Cardinal Bevilacqua will not be available for interviews on Sunday. He met with members of the news media in advance of this occasion. An updated biography is available.
