Cardinal Bevilacqua has made 49 pastoral visits to nursing homes as Archbishop

1:15 p.m. Cardinal makes individual visits to male inmates

2:30 p.m. Prayer Service begins with Cardinal and female inmates

Cardinal makes individual visits with female inmates

4:00 p.m. Cardinal departs prison

Cardinal Bevilacqua is expected to visit with 120 male, 120 female inmates

Last time Cardinal Bevilacqua visited a prison: Graterford State Prison, on May 6, 1994 where he celebrated Mass

Pope John Paul II has called for repentance, forgiveness, conversion and a commitment to justice in the new millennium

The Holy Father has asked every bishop in the world to visit a prison on July 9th, 2000 as the Pontiff will also do

Cardinal Bevilacqua will visit Philadelphia Industrial Correctional Center on July 9, 2000

Montgomery County Correctional Facility administrative policy says rehabilitation must be all encompassing, including a focus on spiritual aspects. Inmates are encouraged to participate in daily religious activities

Reverend Monsignor Francis J. Clemins, Pastor at Visitation B.V.M. Roman Catholic Parish in Trooper, provides assistance for the prison's Catholic activities program

According to the U. S. Department of Justice, there were more than 1.7 million people in federal, state and local correctional facilities in the U.S. in mid-1997

Montgomery County Correctional Facility built in 1986
Original capacity: 572 (507 males/65 females )
Renovated in 1999
Current capacity: 1,397 (1,139 males/258 females )
Current prison population: 1,209
The prison will dedicate a new wing on July 29, 1999
The new wing will add approximately 250 new beds

11:15 a.m. Celebrate Mass for Residents and Staff

12:00 noon Bless new Alzheimer Wing

12:15 p.m. Lunch at Convent (on grounds of Little Flower Manor)

1:00 p.m. Visit with 95 residents

Each resident will receive a carnation and may have a photo
taken with the Cardinal

2:15 p.m. Tour facility and visit with remaining 32 residents


This represents Cardinal Bevilacqua's 50th pastoral visit to a nursing home as Archbishop (1988)

Cardinal Bevilacqua has made 21 pastoral visits to hospitals as Archbishop

Little Flower Manor is a skilled Catholic nursing facility which provides care for 127 residents

Opened its doors to 78 residents in 1977

Founded by the Sisters of the Divine Redeemer

Over fifty percent of residents receive Public Assistance

Mission: compassionate care for the sick, poor and elderly

New wing added in 1987-St. Joseph's Hall
