To qualify for a Phanatic visit, St. Monica students reported their progress to their teachers who in turn notified the Phillies Organization with updates on the children's reading endeavors. From that progress report St. Monica Parish School was chosen as a top performer and was awarded a special visit from the mascot.

The Phillie Phanatic is the star of five children's books and as a result has helped turn his love of reading into the exciting Be a Phanatic About Reading literacy program for children in kindergarten through eighth grade. Created to encourage children to improve their literacy skills by reading for a minimum of 15 minutes a day, the program, which is presented by Verizon, the program currently has over 300,000 children enrolled this school year!
