CARDINAL RIGALI ANNOUNCES THE ESTABLISHMENT
OF SAINT ROCCO PARISH IN AVONDALE, CHESTER COUNTY

On Tuesday, October 12, 2010, the Feast of Our Lady of Pilar, Cardinal Justin Rigali, Archbishop of Philadelphia, announced the establishment of Saint Rocco Parish, 333 Sunny Dell Road, Avondale, Chester County, 19311. Saint Rocco Parish will serve the needs of people of Hispanic heritage and language. Saint Rocco Church, once completed, will seat 500 people and will be built in a Mexican style with a plaza in front.

Misión Santa Maria, Madre de Dios, which since 1992 has been serving the pastoral needs of the Spanish-speaking people in the area has been elevated to a parish with the creation of Saint Rocco. Saint Rocco parish has been established due to the large number of people of Hispanic heritage and language who have moved into southern Chester County. The non-Spanish speaking parishes do not have the resources and language skills necessary to serve the Spanish speaking people of the area, therefore the religious traditions and needs of the Hispanic people of southern Chester County are best served by sharing a common parish.

The boundaries of the newly established parish are St. Patrick Parish, Kennett Square; St. Gabriel Parish, New Garden Township; Assumption B.V.M. Parish, West Grove; Sacred Heart Parish, Oxford; and Our Lady of Consolation Parish, Parkesburg.

On Monday, August 16, 2010, the Feast of Saint Rocco, Cardinal Justin Rigali, Archbishop of Philadelphia, blessed the new Saint Rocco Center and the land of the planned Parish church during the ceremonial groundbreaking.
