INSTALLATION OF ARCHBISHOP CHAPUT
Archdiocesan musicians are making preparations for the Installation Mass of Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., the ninth Archbishop of Philadelphia, with a final instrumental and choral rehearsal. The choir for this Installation and for all of the major Archdiocesan Liturgies, is the Archdiocesan Choir of Philadelphia. The choir is currently composed of 70 singers representing 33 Parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Dr. John A. Romeri, Director for Liturgical Music for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, will lead the rehearsal on
7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

The Installation Mass for Archbishop Chaput on September 8, 2011 will include musical styles ranging from Gregorian Chant to newly composed pieces especially commissioned for this event.
Selections for the Liturgy include the Gregorian Entrance and Communion Chant; The Gloria from Chant Mass, "Missa de Angelis", The Salisbury Alleluia written by Christopher Walker, Parts of the Community Mass by Richard Proulx, some of the great Hymns of the Church such as "O God Beyond All Praising" set to the Gustav Holst tune, Thaxted.
Continuing in the tradition of bring new works into the repertoire for important moments in the life of the church, The Office for Divine Worship and The Office for Liturgical Music commissioned three new works:
- Ecce Sacerdos (Behold the High Priest), a text traditionally used for the entrance of the Bishops. The piece was written by Philadelphia Composer, Mr. Normand Gouin, Director of Music at Old St. Joseph's Church in Old City. The piece begins with and is based upon the traditional Gregorian melody used for this text.
- The Spirit of the Lord is Upon Me, written by Philip Stopford, noted composer from Belfast Ireland. Mr. Stopford was the former Organ Scholar at Canterbury Cathedral, England. Even as a relatively young composer, Mr. Stopford has sold over 100,000 copies in the US alone.
- Concertato on "Gift of Finest Wheat", a hymn originally commissioned by the Archdiocese in 1976 for the Eucharistic Congress. This new arrangement, which includes new choral harmonies and instrumental parts, was composed by Dr. Peter Latona, Director of Music for the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington, DC.
Other pieces receiving their first public performance at the Installation include two movements of new Mass, also written by Normand Gouin, entitled the Mass of Saints Peter and Paul. The two sections include the Acclamation: Mystery of Faith, and the Agnus Dei (Lamb of God). The Responsorial Psalm is also a new composition, written for this occasion by Cathedral Music Director, Dr. John Romeri.
